My Morning Jacket live at Headliners Music Hall, Louisville, KY, May 5, 2001 Review by Will Russell, as posted on the My Morning Jacket mailinglist: Subject: [mymorningjacket] Headliner's Show Review Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 14:52:19 -0000 From: Will Russell Reply to: mymorningjacket@yahoogroups.com To: mymorningjacket@yahoogroups.com Oh yeah..... Danny Cash enters the arena, decked out in full poly-blend Trinity High School basketball uniform complete with striped tube socks pulled snugly up with matching sweat band and aviator police shades. He commences to emit the triumphant opening synth of Van Halen's "Jump" as Jim and crew dawn the stage decked out in respective basketball uniforms and Jim, of course, with the game ball. They had the crowd ready to rock the Halen when suddenly they busted into "one big holiday". This was o.k.-being derby and all-the crowd continued to "wooooo!" and no "wooooo" went unanswered. Jim was especially rock star-esque, thrashing his hair around and pounding out those power cords at center stage- like only Jim James can! He took several leaps into the air and landed almost every one. They rocked the packed derby day crowd with anthems like "lil' billy" and "honest man". There was a noticeable lack of new songs from their newest masterpiece "At Dawn", but who's keeping track when you're being rocked by the best live band to ever emerge from river city? It truly warmed my heart to turn around and see SO many people poking their heads up to see MyMorningJacket with smiles on their faces. They are finally getting the love they deserve. When Johnny Quaid put on his skull and bones hat, we knew we were in trouble. He proceeded to light his guitar on fire and twirl it around in the air. This, however, paled in comparison to him riding his guitar -like the bitch it is- across the stage. For an encore, Jim returned to the stage with an exquisite white leather tasseled jacket and large black wig. Cash began the synth....the crowd began to stir nervously....we knew this song but could not say who, what, when, where, why or how..... Jim took center stage with the mic held close... "Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world..." Yes That's Right Journey's epic rocker "Don't Stop Believin'"! You knew it was gonna happen, it was just a matter of time. As if this wasn't enough to tell your grandkids about, they busted into the full rockin' version of Van Halen's "Jump". To prove their love for louisville or derby or headliners or mayor jerry, they showered the crowd with complimentary briscotti and a good chuckle was had by all. To make matters even more swell, I spotted a MMJ t-shirt- a rare breed indeed- and proceeded to hover around it in hopes of taking it home. I was shut down at first and told that it was not to be sold under any circumstances. I then offered my soul -which incidentally had been offered and rejected by rock and roll- and lo and behold the rock gods smiled upon me. Not only did i get the friggin' t-shirt, it was autographed by that swell group of kids in the rock n roll band. The comments were sweet and made up for the fact that I have long since lost my high school year book. Don't you guys go changin' either. Yes, today is my 25th birthday and I couldn't have asked for anything more. By the way, Bodeco was as good uf shit kickin' music as i've heard and i highly recommend 'em to anyone. I left before Southern Culture on the Skids because I knew full well that rock concerts just don't get any better than that. Work like you don't need the money Love like you've never been hurt and Dance like nobody's lookin! willMy Morning Jacket Live 2001
