dear mother of god, last night was out of control.
first, you need to know that guided by voices was going to play a concert here last night with
my morning jacket. however, last night gbv's lead singer threw his back out during a show in
iowa city last night. i guess that's the kind of stuff that happens when you're a fifty yeal
old rock star that still does high kicks on stage. so we find of about this at about one in the
afternoon and everyone is very disappointed. word spreads fast and we're not even sure that
we'll get a good turnout now. my morning jacket, who drove here from kentucky, show up and talk
about the dilema with carter adams, the guy who puts concerts on here. they suggest that we take
the three thousand dollars we were paying gbv and spend it on whatever. back stage my morning
jacket says, "hey, if there's an ok crowd out there we should just go nuts." they take the stage
and proceded to rock harder than any band i've ever seen. four keg, fourty pizzas, fifty odd cans
of silly string, and six beachballs later we are halfway through their hour set. everyone is having
an awesome time. no one expected this out of these guys. despite conventional wisdom, they just got
better during their second hour of playing. they are kicking beachballs out into the crowd, a few
people have squirtguns, the air is filled with silly string, and they are tearing their set apart.
everyone is dancing. they start to peak out when about twenty people, including myself, are on stage
shaking it like fools. someone in the crowd is waving an american flag. water and beer is flying in
ever direction. everyone is overcome by the immensity of the whole thing. their keyboardist stands
up to go sing and tells my friend to start jamming on the keboard. the singer has jumped off stage
and is in the middle of the crowd. their guitarists are going nuts, and it looks like if their
drummer stopped playing he would drop dead. it will be hard to ever beat this. that show is in the
running for best show,... ever. i salute you my morning jacket. you rocked my ass off.
