WOW!! As usual, our boys exploded with energy and brilliance, and rocked
the roof off the place. Jim seemed to be in a goofy mood, as illustrated
by his off-the-cuff herky jumps and hoedown dance moves (with his back
to the audience) at the end of "Lowdown". In between songs, Jim
entertained us with a tale of the band stopping off to see a highway
attraction called "The Thing". As Matt pointed out to me after the show,
he never got to the part about them actually *seeing* The Thing! Oh
well. Highlights for me were "One Big Holiday", which was utterly
flawless; "X-Mas Curtain"; and of course the solo set. "Golden" was
simply breathtaking.

The crowd was annoyingly loud during Jim's solo appearance. They did
shush up a bit after a while, but Jim started with "By My Car", which
was the quietest and gentlest of the solo songs, and the kids were
yapping most of the way through that. The crowd as a whole was into the
show, but still had that "we're too cool in Austin to dance" vibe. I was
standing on a bench alongside the wall, close to the stage, which gave
me (a 5 foot 3 shorty) a great view of the stage. I spotted a few people
in the crowd who were *really* digging it, including Air Guitar Guy just
below me, and Creative Double-Arm Air Punching Guy a few rows over. This
latter fan performed all kinds of variations on the double-handed "heavy
metal/hang ten/hook 'em horns" hand signals, and at one point looked
like he was doing the Clemson Tiger Paw. He was in his own perfect
little zone.

The sound was quite good; Jim's vocals came through really well. Here's
a semi-accurate setlist:

Magheetah
Dancefloors
Masterplan
Heartbreakin' Man
The Way That He Sings
Just One Thing
X-Mas Curtain (yay!!!)
One Big Holiday
I Will Sing You Songs
Steam Engine
Lowdown
Run Thru

By My Car
Hopefully
Golden

Evelyn Is Not Real
Phone Went West

Jim should be starting his solo in-store appearance at Waterloo Records
right about now. I wish I could have made it over there! Maybe some
sneaky taper will be there to capture the moment for posterity. ;-)

I hope to make it to the second half of the MMJ Austin doubleheader tonight.
