Also issued as a promotional version which comes in a plastic bag, contains a cardboard square with the bandname, title and Pete Cohen's contact details stamped on the front. It also has a blue paper attached with staples which gives information on the history of the band and the plans for 1998. There is no handsewn graphic. Just like the regular release, the back has the titles and the players printed on it, but also the label's postal address. Included is a folded copy of a bandphoto (see the first one above in the header of this page), the backside of this gives info on the release and on future plans as well as contact information of the label.

Reissued in 2001 (somewhere between January and July). Each CD cover is individually hand sewn (at least with red, brown or blue thread) and it has taken 4 years to get around to repressing another 500 copies. This limited reissue was only available through Rocket Girl Mail-order in the UK and the Candle Records website in Australia.

The original 1998 release was limited to 500 copies, and comes in a brown fold-out cardboard sleeve*.
Reissues come in a regular jewelcase with blue sleeve.

* For a long time I was only aware of one brown cardboard sleeve version, the joint release by Sodastream Music and Aquamudvuv Music (AMV017).
Around the Summer of 2020 details of an almost identical 'brown' version were added to Discogs, but released by Trifekta with the same catalog number as their 'blue' version (see the left panel). I do not remember when I found out about this version, but further details or images weren't available at the time, so I wasn't sure yet what to make of it.
Then, in June 2021 another 'brown' version was added to Discogs, this time without a label or catalog number. For this version a set of images was provided. At the moment it was not clear yet whether this was something added by a store at some point or was part of the release, but the details and images showed a hand-numbered red/orange sticker on the back. Confusingly, this number was in the 500 range, so above the 500 Sodastream Music/Aquamudvuv Music copies.

The above led to a couple of questions and therefore I contacted various contributors and sellers of the (now) three 'brown' versions. This is what I have found out so far. Additional information and confirmation is welcome!
All versions share the same front, inside, and disc (including the small print in the matrix). The back of each release is different though, the Sodastream Music and Aquamudvuv Music joint release has label information, the catalog number plus the QuickTime and Macromedia logos. The self-released version has no information on the back at all. The Trifekta version has the label and the catalog number.
All three include the enhanced portion with the "Neon" clip but both the self-released and the Trifekta version come with a warning about a possible virus.

Although my copy doesn't have one, the Sodastream Music and Aquamudvuv Music joint release also has orange/red hand-numbered stickers. Copies with #304 and #345 are known to exist.
Of the self-released version at least copies with #528 and #547 are known. So far the Trifekta version appears to be unnumbered.

Based on this it looks like the joint release came first in an edition of 500 (hand-numbered) copies. Then an unknown number of copies were self-released continuing the hand-numbering from #501. After that Trifekta (maybe when the band signed there) released their version as HORSE003-2 (which might also explain the release date of November 1st 1999 I found somewhere a long long time ago) before reissuing the 'blue' version on May 21, 2001 that has been previously released in the UK and Europe by Tugboat Records (TUG SCD 012) in September 1999 and in the US by Drive-In Records (drive41) in March 2000.

This Song Swap project was borne out Melbourne having gone back into hard lockdown in June. We had a brief reprieve after the first lockdown, and everyone was already fatigued, but to go back into it under tighter restrictions and for longer was certainly taking its toll. We both have young kids, so not being able to see anyone else or even to use the playgrounds was tough on our little ones.

In the first lockdown there seemed to be more efforts to keep people engaged and connected. For example, most houses with kids put hand drawn pictures of rainbows in the front windows along with teddy bears, for other kids to spot as they walked around the neighbourhood - the only sanctioned outing. But in the second lockdown, no such ideas seemed to be around. Instead, the rainbow drawings faded away in the windows.

Likewise on the social front. In the first lockdown there were online concerts aplenty. But the second time around they seemed to evaporate. Maybe because everyone lost the drive, and also probably because the restrictions got so much tighter, with not even one person able go to another’s house. So it got impossible for bands to get together.

We had been busily preparing to go into the studio to start recording our new album, and we had an ambitious schedule of online concerts planned (we were already experimenting with this before COVID). But now we couldn’t do any of that. We even tried setting up software that would allow us to jam online, but it was another insurmountable technical hurdle that we weren’t in a headspace to try and overcome, given we were spending every day at work dealing with people’s flaky connections on video calls.

It is against that backdrop that the Song Swap idea came to be. We couldn’t collaborate or connect in any other way, so the idea was to start a song that speaks to the shared moment we were all in, and then to pass the audio file around to our friends and collaborators to have them build it up, instrument by instrument. We didn’t give any specific requests or instructions to the musicians as to the instrument or their part. So it was quite exciting to see what came back, and it was a pleasant surprise to hear some people gravitate towards their non-primary instruments. It was a wonderful way to connect with folks, some of whom we hadn’t seen or played with for many years. And the amazing thing about music is that so few words were required to communicate what needed to be done. The song speaks for itself, and people just knew what to do.

‘Hard times’ signals the beginning of a new chapter for Smith & Cohen (formally known as Sodastream) offering a stirring take on alt-folk with a tip of the hat to Nashville. The first single from their forthcoming album, Half Life, is an invitation into the duo’s evolving world.

Recorded in a Melbourne home studio, ‘Hard Times’ is built around driving double bass and finger picked acoustic, punctuated by electric guitar and the undertow of heavily effected, bowed double bass—a recurring motif throughout the collection. The arrangement is spare but resonant, allowing Karl Smith’s clear-eyed vocal to inhabit the space between resignation and hope.

Lyrically, 'Hard Times' speaks to the challenges of mid life with a hard-won tenderness. It’s a song about longing and uncertainty, and holding each other up even when the world doesn’t offer easy answers.
With the state of the world so precarious and daily pressures ratcheting up on all sides, the bonds we build matter now more than ever. 'Hard Times' is a celebration of those bonds—it doesn’t sugar-coat the struggle, but in its honesty there’s comfort, connection, and a glimmer of light.

Half Life is the sound of Smith & Cohen coming home to themselves - a record written for the middle years, where longing and contentment sit side by side, and small moments carry the weight of memory. Across eleven songs, Karl Smith and Pete Cohen (who formerly went by the name Sodastream) trace the shape of modern life: friendship, parenthood, heartbreak, hope, and the slow work of making peace with where you’ve landed.

Most of the album was performed entirely by Smith and Cohen and the result is intimate and unmistakably theirs: pulsing double bass, textured acoustic guitar, analogue haze, and a ghostly bowed bass that winds its way in and out of songs throughout. On drums and in the producer’s chair, long-time collaborator Marty Brown brings his deft, unhurried touch to the arrangements, accentuating the dynamics but always letting the songs speak for themselves.

The exception is ‘Fields of green’, a bittersweet duet featuring The Orbweavers, where Marita Dyson’s voice links up with Smith’s for an aching chorus, highlighted by Stuart Flanagan’s incandescent electric guitar. The guest spot feels natural: a nod to friendship and the interconnectedness that underpins so much of the record.

Lyrically, Half Life speaks to the everyday mess and quiet transcendence of adulthood, midweek regrets, suburban heartbreak, and the moments of grace in between. There’s melancholy here, but also resilience and flashes of joy.

For Smith & Cohen, Half Life is both a reckoning and a renewal: a new chapter for a new time. It’s an album that acknowledges what’s passed, but insists there’s still much to hope for.

It is a present to all the artists participating in this project and all the contributors to our VPRO radioshow, 'De Avonden'. Something That We All Find (w/ Ms. John Soda)

Hausmusik 15th anniversary release for which 14 writers (including Thomas Palzer, Franz Dobler, Katja Huber, Harald, Staun, Didi Neidhart, Julian Weber, Sebastian Dietrich, Rev. Christian Dabeler, Almut Klotz, Roderich Fabian, Nora Scholz, Annemone Fesl and Martin Steinm ller) split into pairs to produce seven stories, each beginning with "Man kann nicht immer nur - hören," which translates to, "You can't always listen to..." Several additional contributors (Martin Dessecker, Doris Lasch, Ursula Ponn, Nadine Spengler, Martin Tom Dieck, Atak, CX Huth, Dominik Binegger, Melissa Gates, Helge Reumann, Xavier Robel, Marion Gerth and Silke Heinrich) produced comic book art, and also lent a hand in the creation of the tales.

The musicians, like the writers, worked in twos, with one artist beginning a song and another finalizing it. Pairs include Calexico and the Notwist, Console and Loopspool, Sodastream and Ms. John Soda, Couch and Squares on Both Sides, and more.

Also released in the UK (November 16, 2006), and in the US (December 5, 2006).

All songs were available for sale (99 euro cents per track) in high quality MP3-format (320 kbps) at the Hausmusik download shop [link now dead].
