Note: The Factory Flick was a film exhibition held at Scala Cinema, London, September 13, 1979. This event was given the FAC 9 number. The booklet with the "Heart And Soul" boxed set reads on "tracks" 1-3: "... a 17 minute Super 8 film - to be completed in 1998 - ...", well I'm curious!

"Track" 1 includes "Unknown Pleasures" rehearsals at T.J. Davidson's Rehearsal Studios, Manchester (March-April 1979), an interview with Joy Division's manager (Rob Gretton) recorded March 23, 1979, were he talks about Warsaw, and 3 songs by Joy Division filmed at their Bowdon Vale Youth Club concert on March 14, 1979.

Extra note: Some sources include "track" 4 as a separate 8mm film.

  • Komakino flexi 7" (April 1980)

    7" Factory FAC 28

    1. Komakino
    2. Incubation
    3. As You Said

Note: Recorded at Britannia Row Studios, Islington, March 1980.
Released on flexi 7" single only, initial pressing of 10,000 copies, and given away free.
Track 3 was actually untitled, but is called "As You Said", and is also known as "Incubation 2", or as "And Then Again".

"Komakino" was also released in an US edition, which is a different pressing than the UK one, it's made by Evatone Soundsheets. A US fanzine called The Other Sound gave this flexi away in 1980(?) with one of their issues, including a black & white picture cover as you can see on the scans, front and back (thanks to Jan Erik & Sebastian).

  • Love Will Tear Us Apart 7" (April 1980)

    7" Factory UK FAC 23 (April 1980)
    7" Gap Records Australia SFA 406 (February 1981) - without track 3
    7" Factory US FACUS 23 (June 1981)

    1. Love Will Tear Us Apart (3.18)
    2. These Days (3.21)
    3. Love Will Tear Us Apart (3.06)

Note: Tracks 2-3 recorded at Pennine Sound Studios, Oldham, January 8, 1980.
Track 1 recorded at Strawberry Studios, Stockport, early March 1980 (vocals mixed at Brittania Row Studios).

The recording date for tracks 2-3 is unconfirmed. Record Collector No. 221 (January 1998) is the only source giving this exact date, while most other sources say the session took place in March 1980, as the 2nd "Love Will Tear Us Apart" session and the "Closer" session did.

Except for the Australian 2-track release on Gap Records, the US release, and later UK releases are sometimes said to be issued without track 3 as well. This is not true! Although only "These Days" is mentioned on the b-side label of these releases, it also contains "Love Will Tear Us Apart". There is a USA jukebox promo 7" though, which has only 2 tracks (indeed missing track 3). It comes in a plain white sleeve with a pink sticker announcing the band/song titles, and it has the cat.no. Facus 23. But there's also a 3-track US 7" single release with cat.no. Fac 23 like the UK version.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" was also released as a 7" single in Poland in 1989 (Tonpress S-590), with "She's Lost Control" from the "Unknown Pleasures" album on the b-side, and an unique sleeve. And also as a 7" (promo) single in Spain (Edigsa 19P0095) in 1981, with a stickered (12") sleeve, and a small paper sheet. The songtitles are translated in Spanish "El Amor Nos Separata" and "Estos Dias (This days)", including the mistake in the english translation. Actually, they did not only make a mistake in the English translation, but also in the Spanish titles, since it should read: "El Amor Nos Separar" and "Estos Das"! The latter might just be "a small accent", but the first one is said to be terrible! (Thanks to Eric Carmes, Jan Erik, and Carmen Llorente.)

  • Love Will Tear Us Apart 12" (June 1980)

    12" Factory UK FAC 23.12 (June 1980)
12" Gap Records Australia SFA 406 (February 1981)

US release, and later UK releases are supposed to be issued without track 3 (see above).

Track 4 recorded at Cargo Studios, Rochdale, October 1978.
Track 8 recorded at Central Sound Studios, Manchester, July 1979.
Track 10 recorded live at The Moonlight Club, London, April 2, 1980.
Tracks 11-20 recorded live at the High Hall, Birmingham University, May 2, 1980, Joy Division's last concert!

Track 16 was not listed on the 2LP-set track-listing, and is excluded from all CD-releases!
Not even the Japanese 2CD-set includes this track, although there's enough space on the discs!

The first Italian 2LP pressing includes a slightly different mix, it's really a mis-pressing. Not much difference from the regular version, but there are slightly longer intros/fades than on the approved mix. All later Italian editions have the approved mix (same as the UK version) (info with thanks to Jan Erik!)

The Japanese 2CD-set does include a lyric booklet, hilarious about this is they get so many of the lyrics wrong, sometimes they've got no idea what Ian is singing so it just says ".......". Pretty funny! (info thanks to Jan Erik!)

Note: This video was never officially released, but apparently Qwest US released some promo editions (which were subsequently recalled).

The credits of the original video (when watching it) list this release with cat.no. FACT 207. According to various official sources it should be FAC 277, and the FAC(T) 207 number is given to a different release.

Track 1 is from the Granada TV appearance, September 20, 1978.
Tracks 2-4 are from the Bowdon Vale Youth Club concert, March 14, 1979, and shot in Super 8 by Malcom Whitehead, from the "A Factory Flick" 8mm film.
Tracks 5-7 from the "Something Else" TV appearance, recorded in BBC2 Studios, broadcast live on September 15, 1979.
Track 8 recorded live at the Apollo, Manchester, October 27, 1979, also available on the "Here Are The Young Men" video.
Track 9 recorded live at the Apollo, Manchester, October 27, 1979, unavailable on the "Here Are The Young Men" video.
Track 10 is the promo video, apparently with the original soundtrack as recorded in the clip.
Track 11 is the promo video directed by Anton Corbijn.
Track 12 is the slightly edited Channel 4 TV documentary - see the "Wired Joy Division Feature" promo video (FAC 211).

The 'original version' of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on some of the formats above has been recorded at Strawberry Studios, Stockport, early March 1980 (vocals mixed at Brittania Row Studios), and is the original 7"/12" a-side from 1980.

    12" Touch Touch Tone 7.1
(thanks to Jan Erik for all info & the scans - click image for a larger version!)

Note: This New Order 12" single was released with Joy Division's "As You Said" as a "hidden" track on side B! The CD release for this single does NOT include the "hidden" track.

The 12" single also came with a postcard insert with a picture of Ian Curtis, which would have been a better one to use for the sleeve of the "Heart And Soul" boxed set (just my humble opinion)!

To avoid a far too extensive list on all recording dates of the included tracks on this box, I will only list those recordings which have been previously unreleased on a legal basis:

Tracks 43-45 recorded at Arrow Studios, Manchester, May 1978.
Tracks 47-49, and 52 recorded at Eden Studios, London, March 1979.
Tracks 50-51 recorded at Central Sound Studios, Manchester, July 1979.
Tracks 54-57 recorded at Piccadilly Radio, Pennine Sound Studios, Oldham, June 1979.
Tracks 61-62 recorded at Graveyard Studios, Prestwich, April 1980.
Tracks 63-72 recorded live at The Factory, Hulme, Manchester, July 13, 1979.
Track 73 recorded live at the Prince of Wales Conference Centre, YMCA, London, August 2, 1979.
Tracks 74-76 recorded live at Winter Gardens, Bournemouth, November 2, 1979.
Tracks 77-81 recorded live at the Lyceum Ballroom, London, February 29, 1980.
Tracks 13-14, and 17-19 with added post production.

Liner notes from the back of the box: "A complete studio back catalogue that comprises 80 tracks and 4 CD'S including the Ideal for Living EP, the Factory Sampler, Unknown Pleasures, Earcom 2: Contradiction, Licht und Blindheit and Closer; previously unreleased live material at the Factory, Manchester; the Winter Gardens, Bournemouth; the YMCA Conference Centre and Lyceum Ballroom, London; plus previously unreleased sessions for RCA, Piccadilly Radio and Genetic Records. With a few exceptions, everything Joy Division recorded and released is contained here. Joy Division: 1977 to 1980."

It's much more than just a few, and not only recordings available on other official releases, or made available after the release of "Heart And Soul". Check out my page of "Heart And Soul Exclusions", containing a list of all tracks & recordings not available on "Heart And Soul". Also included are the most important, or only formats where to find them otherwise. Any live recordings ever released officially in any way before or after the release of the boxed set have also been included on this list of exclusions. It can therefore been used as a reference guide to what to collect besides "Heart And Soul".

Although being readily available through import, after almost 4 years this boxed set is finally released domestically in the US on August 28, 2001 through Rhino Entertainment in their Warner Archives series!
Also read the Rhino News page, the Rhino 'Track Notes', and a review from Virginmega.com.

Liner notes from the booklet: "This is not a memento, this is a gig. This is not a souvenir or shifty "not the best of", this is a gig. This is not bootleg chic, this is just a gig. Just a gig by one of the greatest bands that ever lived and wrote and played."

Note: Recorded live at The Warehouse, Preston, February 28, 1980 (the title says it all, doesn't it!?).

The review for this album in the NME from June 1, 1999 had an unseen picture of Ian.

Released in the UK on May 24, 1999, and in the US on July 13, 1999. The exact date of release in Europe, and the rest of the world is unknown to me, but I purchased my copy on April 29, 1999!
Exact release date for the LP version not known either, I came across a copy on December 4, 2000, and the sleeve lists 2000 as year of release. Amazon.co.uk lists October 30, 2000 as date of release.

Scheduled to be available on August 6, 2001 as part of a Dutch only 1,000 numbered copies limited edition 2CD reissue of both NMC live CD's ("Preston 28 February 1980" + "Les Bains Douches 18 December 1979") in a special slipcase called "Fractured Box" (Facd2.61z). After being postponed for an unknown time, it is available since September 26, 2001!

The tracks from "Something Else", as well as the interview are officially previously unreleased recordings. Unfortunately an interview with producer Martin Hannett from the same radio show has not been included on the CD.

Supposed to be released July 31, 2000, but delayed until August 7, 2000.

Tracks 1-4 recorded at BBC Studios, Maida Vale, London, January 31, 1979. First transmission: February 14, 1979.
Tracks 5-8 recorded at BBC Studios, Maida Vale, London, November 26, 1979. First transmission: December 10, 1979.
Tracks 9-10 recorded for a session for "Something Else", BBC TV Studios, September 15, 1979.
Track 11 recorded for "Rock On", BBC Radio 1, September 1979.

On July 16, 2002 re-released in the US by Fuel 2000 Records as part of the New Order & Joy Division "Before & After - The BBC Sessions" 2CD-set (302 061 213 2), which is just a cardboard slipcase with two previously released CD's inside it (similar to the NMC Fractured box-set). Except for Joy Division's "The Complete BBC Recordings", this 2CD-set also contains New Order's "BBC Radio 1 Live In Concert" disc. Both were previously released separately in the US by Fuel 2000 Records.

Recorded live in Paris, December 18, 1979, except tracks 10-12 at the Paradiso, Amsterdam, January 11, 1980,
and tracks 13-16 at the Effenaar, Eindhoven, January 18, 1980.

"Second in the series from the Factory vaults released in conjunction with Factory supremo, Tony Wilson and the band. "Les Bain Douches" features 13 tracks mainly recorded at the December 18th show in 1979 at the now, legendary and extremely fashionably Parisian venue. The bonus material comes from shows recorded in Holland in January 1980.

Artwork by Factory inhouse designer Peter Saville.
The booklet also includes the original poster art for the "Les Bains Douches" show.
Liner notes by Anthony H. Wilson." (source NMC site)

Supposed to be released late August/early September 2000. Then postponed until February/March 2001.
Finally the official release date was set to April 23 (UK), and April 24 (US), 2001.
Available in the shops on April 20, 2001 (at least in Holland, because that's when I purchased my copy).

Originally also planned to be released as a 2,000 copies limited edition 2CD-set in a super-deluxe tin packaging, which was supposed to include the standard music CD plus a CD-ROM of the same concert.

After being postponed for an unknown time, it is available since September 26, 2001!

  • This discography contains only the most important Joy Division various artists sampler appearances.
All other appearances can be found in part 2 of this discography.

For more information on all Joy Division recordings, I have a full chronological list to check out. I also made a list of tracks excluded from the "Heart And Soul" boxed set, and where to find those tracks otherwise.

And well, a Joy Division discography isn't complete without a list of bootlegs. Joy Division was (is?) one of the most booted bands around, and even with the release of the "Heart And Soul" boxed set still worth checkin' out
(see also the mentioned excluded list).

The above list of Joy Division releases are the major known, and different ones.
Many of them were issued through the years in the following territories:
Sweden (NCB), Australia (Gap/EMI), France (Virgin), New Zealand (Factory + RTC), Spain (Edigsa), Portugal (Vimusica), Poland (Tonpress), Germany (Metronome + Rough Trade), Holland (Factory + CBS), Italy (Base Records), Canada (Polygram), Japan (Columbia), Greece (Virgin), Brazil (Stiletto) (from "Heart And Soul", 1997), and Lithuania (Zona Records) (from Bernt Rostad's "Welcome to the Atrocity Exhibition").
I didn't list all various releases in all the different countries. First of all I just don't know about all of them, and secondly most releases are the same as the above ones, and only the labels and catalogue numbers are different. For example the Dutch CD-releases of "Unknown Pleasures", "Closer", and "Substance" just add a 2 after the catalogue numbers (FACD 102, FACD 252, and FACD 2502).
Still, if anyone can come up with a (detailed) list of various releases in various countries, don't hesitate to send me a message.
