    Note: All tracks recorded live at The Electric Circus, Manchester, October 1 & 2, 1977 (the nights before the club was closed). Joy Division performed "At A Later Date" as Warsaw on the 2nd night, but is listed as Joy Division on the sleeve because they changed their name in January 1978.
    Virgin released the 10" in June 1978 (VCL5003). The first 5000 copies came in clear blue vinyl, but also existing in yellow, orange and black vinyl. It was rereleased as a 12" single in Greece in 1984, and as a CD in 1991.

    Released as a 7" single (1,000 copies) in a 14"x14" foldout sleeve, on Joy Division's own Enigma label in June 1978 (Enigma PSS139), after they discovered that another label already was called Enigma, they changed it to Anonymous Records, and released "An Ideal For Living" as a 12" single (1,200 copies) in September or October 1978 (Anonymous ANON1).

    Note: The Factory Flick was a film exhibition held at Scala Cinema, London, September 13, 1979. This event was given the FAC 9 number. The booklet with the "Heart And Soul" boxed set reads on "tracks" 1-3: "... a 17 minute Super 8 film - to be completed in 1998 - ...", well I'm curious!

    "Track" 1 includes "Unknown Pleasures" rehearsals at T.J. Davidson's Rehearsal Studios, Manchester (March-April 1979), an interview with Joy Division's manager (Rob Gretton) recorded March 23, 1979, were he talks about Warsaw, and 3 songs by Joy Division filmed at their Bowdon Vale Youth Club concert on March 14, 1979.

    Extra note: Some sources include "track" 4 as a separate 8mm film.

    Released on the French label Sordide Sentimental in a limited edition of 1,578 copies, which came inside a 3 page, colour gatefold, translation booklet with a text written by Jean-Pierre Turmel, a painting by Jean-Francois Jamoul and a photograph by Anton Corbijn.

    Track 3 was actually untitled, but is called "As You Said", and is also known as "Incubation 2", or as "And Then Again".

    "Komakino" was also released in an US edition, which is a different pressing than the UK one, it's made by Evatone Soundsheets. A US fanzine called The Other Sound gave this flexi away in 1980(?) with one of their issues, including a black & white picture cover as you can see on the scans, front and back (thanks to Jan Erik & Sebastian).

    The recording date for tracks 2-3 is unconfirmed. Record Collector No. 221 (January 1998) is the only source giving this exact date, while most other sources say the session took place in March 1980, as the 2nd "Love Will Tear Us Apart" session and the "Closer" session did.

    Except for the Australian 2-track release on Gap Records, the US release, and later UK releases are sometimes said to be issued without track 3 as well. This is not true! Although only "These Days" is mentioned on the b-side label of these releases, it also contains "Love Will Tear Us Apart". There is a USA jukebox promo 7" though, which has only 2 tracks (indeed missing track 3). It comes in a plain white sleeve with a pink sticker announcing the band/song titles, and it has the cat.no. Facus 23. But there's also a 3-track US 7" single release with cat.no. Fac 23 like the UK version.

    "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was also released as a 7" single in Poland in 1989 (Tonpress S-590), with "She's Lost Control" from the "Unknown Pleasures" album on the b-side, and an unique sleeve. And also as a 7" (promo) single in Spain (Edigsa 19P0095) in 1981, with a stickered (12") sleeve, and a small paper sheet. The songtitles are translated in Spanish "El Amor Nos Separata" and "Estos Dias (This days)", including the mistake in the english translation. Actually, they did not only make a mistake in the English translation, but also in the Spanish titles, since it should read: "El Amor Nos Separar" and "Estos Das"! The latter might just be "a small accent", but the first one is said to be terrible! (Thanks to Eric Carmes, Jan Erik, and Carmen Llorente.)

    Not even the Japanese 2CD-set includes this track, although there's enough space on the discs!

    The first Italian 2LP pressing includes a slightly different mix, it's really a mis-pressing. Not much difference from the regular version, but there are slightly longer intros/fades than on the approved mix. All later Italian editions have the approved mix (same as the UK version) (info with thanks to Jan Erik!)

    The Japanese 2CD-set does include a lyric booklet, hilarious about this is they get so many of the lyrics wrong, sometimes they've got no idea what Ian is singing so it just says ".......". Pretty funny! (info thanks to Jan Erik!)

    It's much more than just a few, and not only recordings available on other official releases, or made available after the release of "Heart And Soul". Check out my page of "Heart And Soul Exclusions", containing a list of all tracks & recordings not available on "Heart And Soul". Also included are the most important, or only formats where to find them otherwise. Any live recordings ever released officially in any way before or after the release of the boxed set have also been included on this list of exclusions. It can therefore been used as a reference guide to what to collect besides "Heart And Soul".

    Although being readily available through import, after almost 4 years this boxed set is finally released domestically in the US on August 28, 2001 through Rhino Entertainment in their Warner Archives series!

    The review for this album in the NME from June 1, 1999 had an unseen picture of Ian.

    Released in the UK on May 24, 1999, and in the US on July 13, 1999. The exact date of release in Europe, and the rest of the world is unknown to me, but I purchased my copy on April 29, 1999!
    Exact release date for the LP version not known either, I came across a copy on December 4, 2000, and the sleeve lists 2000 as year of release. Amazon.co.uk lists October 30, 2000 as date of release.

    Scheduled to be available on August 6, 2001 as part of a Dutch only 1,000 numbered copies limited edition 2CD reissue of both NMC live CD's ("Preston 28 February 1980" + "Les Bains Douches 18 December 1979") in a special slipcase called "Fractured Box" (Facd2.61z). After being postponed for an unknown time, it is available since September 26, 2001!

    A compilation of the two Joy Division Peel Sessions (see above), the two tracks from the "Something Else" TV session from September 15, 1979, plus a rare interview from "Rock On" (September 1979), between BBC Radio One DJ Richard Skinner, Ian Curtis, and Stephen Morris.

    The tracks from "Something Else", as well as the interview are officially previously unreleased recordings. Unfortunately an interview with producer Martin Hannett from the same radio show has not been included on the CD.

    Supposed to be released July 31, 2000, but delayed until August 7, 2000.

    On July 16, 2002 re-released in the US by Fuel 2000 Records as part of the New Order & Joy Division "Before & After - The BBC Sessions" 2CD-set (302 061 213 2), which is just a cardboard slipcase with two previously released CD's inside it (similar to the NMC Fractured box-set). Except for Joy Division's "The Complete BBC Recordings", this 2CD-set also contains New Order's "BBC Radio 1 Live In Concert" disc. Both were previously released separately in the US by Fuel 2000 Records.

    The Fractured Music Archive Volume Two

    Recorded live in Paris, December 18, 1979, except tracks 10-12 at the Paradiso, Amsterdam, January 11, 1980,
    and tracks 13-16 at the Effenaar, Eindhoven, January 18, 1980.

    "Second in the series from the Factory vaults released in conjunction with Factory supremo, Tony Wilson and the band. "Les Bain Douches" features 13 tracks mainly recorded at the December 18th show in 1979 at the now, legendary and extremely fashionably Parisian venue. The bonus material comes from shows recorded in Holland in January 1980.

    Supposed to be released late August/early September 2000. Then postponed until February/March 2001.
    Finally the official release date was set to April 23 (UK), and April 24 (US), 2001.
    Available in the shops on April 20, 2001 (at least in Holland, because that's when I purchased my copy).

    Originally also planned to be released as a 2,000 copies limited edition 2CD-set in a super-deluxe tin packaging, which was supposed to include the standard music CD plus a CD-ROM of the same concert.

    For more information on all Joy Division recordings, I have a full chronological list to check out. I also made a list of tracks excluded from the "Heart And Soul" boxed set, and where to find those tracks otherwise.

    And well, a Joy Division discography isn't complete without a list of bootlegs. Joy Division was (is?) one of the most booted bands around, and even with the release of the "Heart And Soul" boxed set still worth checkin' out
    (see also the mentioned excluded list).

    The above list of Joy Division releases are the major known, and different ones.
    Many of them were issued through the years in the following territories:
    Sweden (NCB), Australia (Gap/EMI), France (Virgin), New Zealand (Factory + RTC), Spain (Edigsa), Portugal (Vimusica), Poland (Tonpress), Germany (Metronome + Rough Trade), Holland (Factory + CBS), Italy (Base Records), Canada (Polygram), Japan (Columbia), Greece (Virgin), Brazil (Stiletto) (from "Heart And Soul", 1997), and Lithuania (Zona Records) (from Bernt Rostad's "Welcome to the Atrocity Exhibition").
    I didn't list all various releases in all the different countries. First of all I just don't know about all of them, and secondly most releases are the same as the above ones, and only the labels and catalogue numbers are different. For example the Dutch CD-releases of "Unknown Pleasures", "Closer", and "Substance" just add a 2 after the catalogue numbers (FACD 102, FACD 252, and FACD 2502).
    Still, if anyone can come up with a (detailed) list of various releases in various countries, don't hesitate to send me a message.
