After Makin' Time split up, Martin Blunt and Fay Hallam formed The Gift Horses with Graham Day (ex-The Prisoners). They released one single, Germany only ...

The Gift Horses

Graham Day (vocals)
Fay Hallam (organ/vocals)

7" single Pop-I POP 16.1L Rosemary / Learning To Bring Yourself Down 1987
Germany only; white vinyl, purple/white p/s, 500 only; or black vinyl, green/white p/s

After The Gift Horses split, Graham Day formed The Prime Movers with another ex-The Prisoners, Allan Crockford. After their first album "Sins Of The Fourfathers", Fay Hallam joined the band and played on the German reissue of "Sins Of The Fourfathers". They released two more albums, "Earth Church" and "Arc". Graham Day is now married to Fay Hallam ...
Graham Day and Allan Crockford have since formed the band The Solarflares, and have released two albums. Fay Hallam is now in Phaze, who have released their debut album "Who Do We Think You Are" on the Vinyl Japan record label, late 2002. Allan Crockford plays the guitar for Phaze as well as bass for The Solarflares.

Martin Blunt joined a local Wolverhampton band in mid-1988. This group was fronted by singer/songwriter Barry 'Baz' Kettley, but over the next few months Martin Blunt brought in Jon Brookes on drums and Rob Collins on keyboards. They also came up with a name: THE CHARLATANS. Between November 1988 and May 1989 the band played half-a-dozen gigs around Manchester, the West Midlands and London (the LSE) supporting The Stone Roses.

Meanwhile, The Charlatans recorded several demos, including "Song By The Severn", "Angelica", "Drowning", and "Nothing's Left", all with vocals by Baz. In April 1989, Baz decided to quit just as the others spotted a potential replacement in a local band who'd played a handful of gigs in Manchester and Warrington, as well as one gig supporting The Charlatans (said to be September 30, 1988).

The Electric Crayons
(-1989)
Tim Burgess (vocals)
Johnny Snake (guitar)
Nick Clare (bass)
Alex (drums)

7" single Emergency MIV 3 Hip Shake Junkie / Happy To Be Hated June 1989

The new singer, Tim Burgess was in a band called The Electric Crayons. They mostly played covers by bands like the Stooges, and the Electric Prunes, but have also released one 7" single (see above), which came out around the same time Tim joined The Charlatans (June 1989).

Before The Electric Crayons, Tim Burgess has been playing with a couple of various bands, of which none is known to have played any gigs. However, at least one of those bands pinned down some tracks on tape. Thanks to Dave Reid, the following information is available on this page: Around 1985-1986 Tim Burgess was guitarist (!) in a band called Love Cindy, together with Ian Atherton on bass, Jonah on vocals, and ??? on drums. They made a demo tape featuring 4 tracks: "I'm Not Very Clever But I Can Lift Heavy Things", "She Done Him Wrong", "Once Upon A Time", and "See The Light"(?).

Besides Tim another newcomer was added to The Charlatans, a second guitarist called John Baker a.k.a. Jon Day (ex-The Violent Sides, and ex-Liquid Egg/Liquid Egg Box or Liquidy Headbox - no releases).

The Charlatans now was Tim Burgess on vocals, John Baker on guitar, Martin Blunt on bass, Rob Collins on the Hammond organ, and Jon Brookes on drums. Their set changed, most of the old songs went out, and they started working on new material, mainly with Rob Collins as songwriter, and Tim Burgess as lyricist. A demo tape ("October 89") was made, featuring three new songs (see the discography page).

The rest is history, as they say ...

Since then there have been only a few bandmember changes:
Early 1991 guitarist John Baker left the band (later on he formed the band Spin Playground), but was quite quickly replaced by Mark Collins (no relation to Rob). He used to play in the bands The Waltones, and Candlestick Park, and has been a roadie for the Inspiral Carpets, along with Noel Gallagher.

The Waltones and Candlestick Park information and pictures have been taken from Sty In The Sky, the homepage of lead-vocalist James Knox. More (detailed) information about Mark Collins' old bands can be found there. It includes pictures, a biography and a discography. Great stuff!

On July 23, 1996, during the recording sessions for the "Tellin' Stories" album, Rob Collins tragically died in a car crash, aged 33. The band decided to "continue in his memory" as they stated in a press release.
Soon after the tragic event, Martin Duffy from Primal Scream played keyboards during some gigs, as well as on the remaining parts of the "Tellin' Stories" album.

Since March 1997 Tony Rogers is the band's keyboard/organ player. Before the Charlatans he had his own band, Jobe, together with his brother Don. They released one album ("Rosaries & Ice Cream" on Vicoroy), and two singles ("I Know", and "Earth", both unavailable in the UK).
